Strawberry Picking at Sweet Berry Farms

It's finally Spring! Well it was Spring. It is now mid-May and Summer is quickly approaching.  In Central Texas that means it is a busy time of year for the
working honey bee. The flowers are in full bloom and t'is the season for fruit! My personal favorite and highlight of this post, strawberries.

I made the 40 min cruise though the hill country back in  April. My destination, a midsize farm out in Marble Falls, Sweet Berry Farms. There a few different varieties of strawberries growing at at time. There were plenty for the picking. Some were noticeably damaged. The area sustained a hail storm a few weeks before.

These red beauties were some of the sweetest berries I ever had. Bursting with flavor, Vitamin C, and ready to take home. I ended up going home with 4lbs of fresh off the vine berries. The temperature is fluctuating right now from chilled to ridiculously humid. Strawberry smoothies was all the rage that week. Until, I had the grand idea to make Jam....I'll save the reviews of that experiment for a different post.

It felt good to walk about the farm. The butterflies followed us around and the bees, oh the busy bumble bees. I'll probably come out with a collection of bumble bee photos one day soon. They are wonderful subjects. The tiny female fleet bouncing from one pollen patch to the next. Without the honeybee's hard work and dedication, this strawberry may have never been at all. The fruit of their labor, the nectar of the gods, Honey. This photo of the bee is probably my favorite of the day. A bumble bee knee deep in pollen and off for to the next flowering fruit. If you ever get a chance I recommend watching "Who Killed the Honey Bees" documentary.

Sweet Berry Farms also has plenty of games for kid-o's to stay entertained. From tractor train rides, feeding goats, and berry bouncers. The horses that day were a little camera shy. If you missed strawberry season this year, be sure to catch Blackberry and Peach seasons. When Halloween rolls around well, that's hay field maze season!
