Architects of Air
Photos by Zina
As I waited in the air lock, shoes off and camera ready, I was briefed on safety procedures and a bit of the instillation's history. Quite honestly it was hard to concentrate
when just a few millimeters of balloon like material separated the world I came from (full of bustling traffic and a winter chill) to a world of lights, color, and imagination.
Once through the pentagonal air lock, I looked up and instantly let my camera fall by my side. The dome like room was flooded with red light. A grand entrance with tunnels that led in every color and direction. This impressive structure owes its beauty to two elements; sunlight and air. That's it! Of course as well to Alan Parkinson, founder and artistic director of AoA and his staff.
As I walked through the tunnels I heard children's laughter. The adults were equally in aw. One individual spun in circles, arms out, head back, instantly transformed into a younger version of themselves. This is art, interactive, positive, enjoyable, and inspiring. There are currently five of Mr. Parkinson's luminara traveling the globe. This particular one I visited is called Pentalum.
Throughout the structure there are plenty of places to sprawl out or find a quite nook to take it all in. Each design is inspired by various elements such as Islamic architecture, Gothic cathedrals, and a brilliant display of lights and colors.
The structure really added to the ever growing Austin skyline. Pentalum has since packed up and is hitting the road to inspire a new city. I recommend catching their next instillation in a city near you.
