Ben White Carnival

The carnival came to town back in May. Nestled on the corner of an empty lot off Ben White and East of I-35 the Cabtree Carnival quietly set up. There were in town a few weeks prior. However their last run was cut short do to the rainy weather Austin has been experiencing. ( By the way, when did I move to Seattle?) That evening in fact was surprisingly cooler
than I have come to expect from
Austin. And by cooler I mean it was 72F and 1/2 half the normal humidity.

This was my first road side carnival in a while. The first thing I see when I walk in, GOLDFISH! Real live goldfish. This stuff really happens? I admit, the whole idea behind wailing around a living creature in a box while running to the next ride and stuffing your face with cotton candy doesn't sit to well with me. Nonetheless, the night was off to a great start. This place had all the classic rides and treats. An apple a day is what the doctor ordered. Dr never said it couldn't be covered in chocolate and sprinkles right?

However, after I saw fried Oreo's all bets were off. I was going in! My first fried Oreo experience had commenced. After a quick run to the token machine, the warm batch of 4 was mine. Word to the wise, consume after you finish you are done riding. By the end of the night, I felt like I had a carnival hangover.

After about a minute into our first ride, the egg shaped spinning vortex of doom, I quickly realized how foolish I had been. I could feel the fried batter separate from the cookie on the uphill swing and slam back together again on the decline. Nonetheless I bought this wristband and it was going to be put to good use. The swings and ferries wheel became the fall back for when our stomach needed a minute to find its center and my eyes still longed for a view.

This roadside carnival has since packed up and is off to the next city. To fill a void often missing in our day to day hustle and bustle. To shine bright against the dark summer night skies and spreading a sense of wonder, adventure, and challenges. We will be on the look out for their next stop in Austin. See you there.
